On the top of the snowy hill, in the hermitage of the Devadaru grove, the Rishis of yore inter- rogated Vyasa, who was seated, rapt in thought. मानुषाणां हितं धर्मं वर्तमाने कलौ युगे शौचाचारं यथावच्च वदसत्यवती सुतः २ 2. Expound, o son of Satyavati! the law, which is for the good of mankind, in the present Kali age; and the practice of purification, such as it ought to be. तच्छ्रुत्वर्षिवाक्यं तु सशिष्योऽङ्गयर्कसम्निभः प्रत्युवाच महातेजाः श्रुतिस्मृतिविशारदः ३ 3.
